Couple 'Sells' Daughter for iPhone
A Chinese couple was busted selling their baby daughter in Shanghai and using the money to pay for a shopping spree that included a new iPhone.
The couple, identified only as Mr. Teng and Ms. Zhang, pretended the woman’s baby bump was a tumor to hide the pregnancy as they looked for a buyer online, the city’s Jiefang Daily newspaper reported.
But the parents — who, according to ABC News asked for offers between $4,900 and $8,200 in online postings titled, “Adopt a Baby” — maintained that they were only trying to find a better home for the little girl.
“We did not send the baby off for a profit, but to give the child a better life of security,” the couple said in the Chinese-language newspaper. Prosecutors are considering whether to charge them with human trafficking, according to the report.
The couple — who share two older children together — found a buyer before giving birth to the baby girl at home, where they exchanged the newborn for cash deposited into their bank account the same day, the state media reported.
