When a Hindu Deity Boycotted a Festival, despite Invitation
A deity, "Larain Mahadev" in Kullu district, is staying away from Dusshera festival for the last 42 years, despite being extended official invitation to attend the weeklong festivities at Dhalpur grounds of Kullu town. The deity attended the Dussehra last time in 1971, when there was a fierce clash among two groups at Dhalpur grounds, during which, followers of Larain Mahadev had fled from the spot, leaving behind the palanquin, resulting in some scratches to it.
The clash had taken place between the supporters of Shringa Rishi and Balu Nag on the issue of walking on the right side of Lord Raghunath during which, supporters from one side fired gun shots, leading to the death of a youth from Kangra. After 1971, followers of Shringa Rishi too boycotted the ceremony for 11 years. But it is Larain Mahadev, worshipped in Ujhi valley of Kullu district, who never returned to Kullu Dussehra after witnessing the bloody clash. Each year, Kullu district administration extends invitation to over 250 deities, including Larain Mahadev of Larankelo, but the latter continues to boycott the festival.
